Projects & ReportsCurrent ProjectsSecurity Management System The USISTF is building tools for tomorrow’s security, today. Since 2004, the U.S.-Israel Science and Technology Foundation (USISTF) has worked on the Security Management System (SMS) Project, created to address the growing threat and increased sophistication of terrorist attacks on citizens and infrastructure, as well as natural disasters. The approach was straightforward - enhance security through standardized evaluation of an organization’s management system. The SMS Project blended Israeli security expertise with American management know-how, resulting The benefits and effectiveness of the security management system were documented at twelve “proof of concept” sites in the United States and Israel. Each site was chosen from diverse industry sectors that had significant vulnerability to security threats due the nature of the services they provided. They included hospitals, sea ports, utilities, the defense industry and commercial office buildings. Success at the pilot sites subsequently led to USISTF’s close work with the Standards Institution of Israel (SII) which produced Israel Standard (SI) 24001, Security and Continuity Management System, now officially adopted as the national standard of Israel. In 2006, USISTF began implementation of the SMS at Asaf Harofeh and RAMBAM Medical Centers within Israel’s Ministry of Health system. This next phase will bring the two hospitals into full compliance with (SI) 24001 by midyear 2008. USISTF has proudly been working with Rotem Industries, AcuTech Consulting Group, and SII in this undertaking. USISTF will continue to deliver (SI) 24001 to facilities in Israel with existing and future needs for effective security management. The Foundation has also begun preliminary activities for the next phase of this jointly developed U.S.-Israeli concept, intended as a full scale implementation within the United States at diverse and strategic facilities. The USISTF is heavily involved in advocating for the insertion of a security management system as a routine element of organizational operations. USISTF strongly believes that successful use of the SMS standard can position an organization as a progressive leader in addressing unpredictable security threats from a wide spectrum of causes, ranging from deliberate acts of terror to accidents and natural catastrophes. As the SMS Project finds new applications, we shall continue our efforts to familiarize organizations with the concept of security as an ingrained element of regular business practices.
